Asakan
About
Asakan, the media outlet dedicated to contemporary art from the African continent, is the leading multidisciplinary digital daily committed to African, diasporic and international artistic and cultural life, thanks to experienced contributors from every continent.
Our ambition is to provide a space for in-depth debate and reflection, where major contemporary art issues, exclusive interviews with renowned and emerging artists and collectors, expert art-market analyses, criticism, discoveries and knowledge are shared through a travel journal connecting Africa and the world.
More than an ordinary media outlet that informs and educates about art, Asakan also aims to be a vibrant intercultural and artistic space where art from around the world is presented with the constant promotion of humanity as its guiding principle.
Contemporary art, Africa and diversity are the three major pillars on which Asakan is built. They embody the very essence of our name, « Aśakan », a Yoruba word combining asa, meaning « practices », and kan, meaning « particular ». It expresses our desire to offer a distinctive perspective on contemporary artistic practices from Africa and its diaspora, while remaining open to the rest of the world.
